Fans have found irrefutable evidence of the Illuminates in Helldivers 2, but Arrowhead is denying it for now.
Helldivers 2 may have had a rocky time of it in the last few months but the way developer Arrowhead Studios interact with fans, and play the role of totalitarian Super Earth government on social media is still a lot of fun.
The Swedish developer was at its best earlier in the year when they flat out denied evidence from fans that there were flying bugs in the game, calling it ‘filthy lies’.
The flying bugs were later added to the game officially and now it’s happened again, with the developer denying fan sightings of a new, third enemy faction, the Illuminates, calling them ‘fake news’.
Helldivers 2 fans have started posting pictures on Twitter and Reddit of maps with a new purple sector, which has never been seen before in the game.
The pictures also show a symbol in the same purple sector, that is unmistakably the Illuminate logo from Helldivers 1, as seen below.
Suspiciously, the purple areas werere moved from the map almost immediately, before fans received an in-game message, from Super Earth Armed Forces High Command, saying:
‘Some Helldivers may have noticed a recent service outage in the Major Order Communication Display. The issue has since been resolved.’
The message goes on to blame the ‘outage’ on a technician who died in a ‘server farm’ and broke the equipment with their ‘organic tissue’.
The statement also claims the deceased’s family has been notified, and fined for damages.
Fans aren’t convinced, however, and believe the Illuminate’s return is only a matter of time now, just like the flying bugs.
The Illuminates are a psionic alien species, known to have teleportation technology and energy weapons and shields, and were the third enemy faction in Helldivers 1.
Real or not, this fun teaser comes in the aftermath of heavy criticism from fans, complaining that Arrowhead’s recent updates have made the game harder and less fun to play.
The developer replied by promising to ‘re-examine our approach to balance’, with a 60-day roadmap to make the game more fun.
