Is NES Remix making a comeback? (Nintendo)

A Nintendo tournament from the 1990s appears to be making a comeback through a new Switch game, which also sounds like a NES Remix successor.

As Nintendo looks to sunset the original Switch with a quieter 2024 line-up, one of the stop-gap games on the horizon may have just been revealed.

Beyond remasters of Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door and Luigi’s Mansion 2, Nintendo’s first party Switch line-up for the rest of the year is unknown – with rumours suggesting the company is preparing to launch the console’s successor by March next year (or maybe even this year ).

One of the titles set to fill the gap may have been outed through an ESRB rating, which has listed a game based on the Nintendo World Championships.

According to the rating , Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition is a ‘collection of 2D challenges and platformer games in which players traverse through various modes (e.g. speedrun, survival). Several challenges involve reaching specific points, while others prompt players to defeat small enemies or survive brief battles.

‘Some games depict pixelated characters using small swords or arrows to strike at enemies; enemies typically get stunned or disappear in a flash.’

If you’re unaware, the Nintendo World Championships first took place in 1990 in the US, and saw players compete in challenges across various NES games (namely Super Mario Bros., Rad Racer, and Tetris) on a bespoke cartridge – which has since become incredibly valuable today.

The championships were referenced in the 2014 sequel to NES Remix , which offered bite-sized chunks of NES titles distilled into WarioWare-like microgames. If players had purchased the original NES Remix, you unlocked a special Nintendo World Championships Remix where you could play three successive challenges in Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, and Dr. Mario.

Judging by the ESRB description, it sounds like this new game will be something similar to NES Remix, perhaps repackaged under a new name. The way the title is structured suggests there might also be future entries covering other Nintendo consoles, if this one sells well.

The existence of Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition was teased prior to the rating by trusted leaker and Twitter user Pyoro_ X, who posted a picture of the Nintendo World Championships cartridge on Thursday.

It’s unusual for a Nintendo game to leak in this way though, so this might be an imminent surprise release, or something the company has planned for some sort of presentation in the coming weeks.
